Stove problems we fix every day

Gas burner clicking but not lighting

Endless clicking with no flame usually means a wet or cracked spark igniter, a clogged burner cap, or a failing spark module. If every burner clicks nonstop even when the knobs are off, moisture or a shorted igniter switch is grounding the circuit. Igniter and switch repairs typically run $130 to $260 installed.

Electric burner not working

On coil tops the element or the burner receptacle it plugs into is the usual failure; on smooth tops it is the radiant element beneath the glass or the infinite switch that feeds it. We test the element, receptacle, and switch in one visit, and all three are common truck-stock parts for GE, Whirlpool, and Frigidaire ranges.

Burner stuck on high or won't adjust

An electric burner that runs full blast regardless of the knob points to a failed infinite switch, and it should be treated as urgent, because a stuck-on element is a fire risk. On gas stoves, a worn burner valve causes the same complaint. Switch replacement is a fast, inexpensive repair.

Glass cooktop cracked or element burned out

Radiant elements under the glass burn out like light bulbs and are replaceable without changing the glass, typically $160 to $300 installed. A cracked glass top itself can be replaced too, though on budget ranges the glass alone can approach half the cost of a new unit, so we give you both numbers before proceeding.

Gas smell from the stove

A faint gas whiff at ignition is normal for a second or two; gas odor while the stove is off is not. Loose burner valve connections, a leaking regulator, or a supply-line fitting are the usual sources. Shut the gas off at the valve behind the range and treat it as a same-day call. We leak-test every joint with a manometer and detector.

Burner flame weak, yellow, or uneven

Clogged burner ports, a misaligned burner cap, or a failing pressure regulator produce lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones. Yellow flames also mean incomplete combustion, so it is worth fixing promptly. Cleaning and regulator work usually lands between $120 and $250.

Stove knobs or touch controls not responding

Worn knob shafts and failed infinite switches are common on older ranges, while newer Samsung and LG models more often lose their touch control membrane or main control board. Control lockouts after a power surge sometimes clear with a reset, which we try before replacing any board.

Induction cooktop not detecting pans

If cookware that used to work now triggers a pan-detection error, the usual suspects are a failed induction coil or the power board that drives it. Confirm the pan is magnetic first; a magnet should stick to the base. Induction board repairs run higher than radiant elements but remain well below the cost of a new induction range.

Repair or replace your stove?

Repair wins for most stove and range failures: igniters, switches, elements, and valves run $120 to $300 installed, against $700 or more for a basic new electric range and $1,000-plus for gas, before delivery and hookup. A gas range is generally worth repairing well past 15 years because the burner hardware is simple and durable. Lean toward replacement when a budget smooth-top needs both a glass cooktop and a control board, or when an electric range past 12 years needs a $400-plus main board. Pro-style ranges from Viking, Wolf, and Thermador are almost always worth repairing at any age given their replacement cost. We quote flat before any work begins.

Stove repair FAQ

How much does it cost to fix a stove burner?

Igniters, infinite switches, coil elements, and receptacles run $120 to $260 installed. Radiant elements under a glass top run a bit more, typically $160 to $300, because the cooktop has to be lifted to access them.

How long does a stove repair take?

Most jobs take 45 to 75 minutes. Igniters, switches, and elements for the major brands are stocked on our trucks, so the large majority of stove calls are finished in a single visit.

Is a 10-year-old range worth repairing?

Almost always. At 10 years the typical failures are burner-level parts costing $120 to $300, a fraction of a new range installed. The exception is a budget smooth-top needing both glass and a control board, where we will tell you the numbers do not work.

Why does my gas burner keep clicking after it lights?

One thing worth checking yourself: dry the burner area thoroughly and make sure each burner cap is seated squarely on its base; a cap knocked askew during cleaning is the most common cause. If clicking continues with everything dry and seated, an igniter switch has likely shorted and needs replacement.

I smell gas near my stove. Should I still use it?

No. Turn the burners off, shut the gas valve behind the range if you can reach it, ventilate the kitchen, and do not operate switches near a strong odor. A persistent smell warrants a call to your gas utility first; for a faint fitting-level leak, we leak-test and repair the valve or regulator the same day.

What brands of stove do you repair?

All major brands: GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, and Bosch, plus pro-style ranges from Viking, Wolf, and Thermador. Gas, electric, dual-fuel, and induction are all covered, and common failure parts ride on our trucks.
