Garbage Disposal problems we fix every day
Disposal hums but won't spin
A hum with no grinding means the flywheel is jammed, usually by a bone fragment, fruit pit, or utensil wedged between the impeller and the shredder ring. Clearing a jam with the hex wrench port and resetting the overload is a quick, inexpensive service call. If the motor hums with nothing jammed, the bearings have seized and the unit is done.
Disposal is completely dead, no sound at all
First suspects are the red reset button on the bottom of the unit, a tripped breaker, or a failed wall switch. If power reaches the disposal and it still does nothing, the motor windings or internal overload have failed, which on most units means replacement rather than repair.
Disposal leaking under the sink
Leaks come from three places: the sink flange mounting at the top (the classic GE failure), the dishwasher or drain hose connections on the side, or the housing seam on the bottom. Flange and hose leaks are cheap fixes; a bottom leak means the internal seal is gone and the unit needs replacing.
Disposal drains slowly or backs up
Slow draining is usually a clogged trap or drain line downstream of the disposal, not the disposal itself, often from grease or fibrous scraps like celery and corn husks. Worn impellers that no longer grind fine can contribute on older units. Snaking the line and checking the grind usually solves it in one visit.
Loud grinding, rattling, or metal-on-metal noise
A rattle is often just a dropped coin or screw riding the flywheel, retrieved in minutes. A constant metallic grind with nothing inside points to worn or corroded grinding components, a known issue on older KitchenAid units, or failing motor bearings, both of which typically point toward a new disposal rather than parts.

Repair or replace your garbage disposal?
Disposals are the one appliance where replacement is often the default: a basic 1/3 to 1/2 HP unit costs $80 to $150, so once a service visit exceeds a jam-clear or a flange reseal, a new disposal installed for $200 to $400 usually beats repairing the old one. Budget units from Waste King or GE past 5 years rarely justify parts. The exception is premium hardware: a 3/4 or 1 HP InSinkErator Evolution runs $300 to $500 new, so jam clearing, seal work, and mount repairs on those are money well spent.

Garbage Disposal repair FAQ
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a garbage disposal?
For budget units, replacement usually wins: a new 1/2 HP disposal installed runs $200 to $350, and most internal failures aren't economically repairable. Jams, leaky flanges, and worn splash guards are worth fixing on any unit, and premium InSinkErator models justify real repair work.
How long does disposal replacement take?
About an hour for a straight swap, a bit longer if the sink flange needs resealing or the drain plumbing has to be reworked to fit the new unit. Our trucks carry common InSinkErator and Waste King replacements, so it's almost always a single visit.
My disposal just hums. Can I fix it myself?
Often, yes. With the power off, insert a 1/4-inch hex wrench in the socket on the bottom of the unit and work it back and forth to free the flywheel, remove whatever was jamming it with tongs, then press the red reset button. If it still only hums after that, the motor has seized and the unit needs replacing.
Why does my disposal smell even after running it?
Food waste collects under the rubber splash guard and in the grind chamber, and the baffle itself absorbs odor over time. Scrub the underside of the splash guard, grind ice with citrus peel, and replace the baffle if the smell returns; it's a $90 to $150 fix that also stops splash-back.
How long should a garbage disposal last?
Budget units last 5 to 8 years; a well-built 3/4 or 1 HP InSinkErator commonly runs 10 to 15. Grinding regularly with cold water, avoiding grease and fibrous scraps, and fixing jams promptly instead of forcing them are what get a unit to the long end of that range.
